AEG Peter Behrens Ashtray 1907

- sold -

A very beautiful and rare industrial design object from ~1907.
A seemingly "mundane" ashtray, but fascinating upon closer inspection.
Crafted from a very beautiful dark bottle green/olive green porcelain in an unusual shape.
This hexagonal honeycomb shape is a design by Peter Behrens.
Behrens is considered the first industrial designer; his objects and designs reflect an early corporate design.
A brand's formal language reminds the viewer of the manufacturer, regardless of the object.
In this case, it was AEG – for which Peter Behrens coordinated the objects and the company's presence.
This is also the case with this ashtray, which was manufactured in-house by the AEG porcelain department.
Its shape is based on the AEG logo from 1907, which was also designed by Behrens.
A gem with a functional purpose that is a rarity.
