A monumental oil painting by the renowned artist and painter Constantin Stoiloff.
This landscape-format painting is titled "Gold Transport in Siberia."
It depicts a column of wagons and horsemen racing through a snow-covered Russian landscape. In both subject and style, it is a characteristic work by the famous Viennese artist, who favored depicting Cossack riders, carriages, and sleighs within atmospheric winter settings—works that enjoyed great popularity thanks to their vivid portrayal of movement and atmosphere.
Here, approximately twenty horsemen—clad in traditional attire and carrying flags—guard the precious cargo. Through the use of rapid, translucent brushstrokes, the artist dramatically renders the snow kicked up by the horses, the hazy weather conditions, and the animals' warm breath.
Due to his focus on Russian subjects, Baumgartner adopted the pseudonym (or professional name) Constantin Stoiloff—or Adolf Baumgartner-Stoiloff. The painting was created while the artist was still living within the Habsburg Monarchy. The vast Russian Empire—at that time still linked to Western monarchies—captivated the imagination with its sheer scale, natural landscapes, and sense of the unknown. Much like Orientalism—the early 20th-century fascination with places such as Egypt and Asia—distant lands and regions inspired the European art scene and high society.
It is within this context that Stoiloff’s large-scale painting should be viewed.
The dimensions of the painting itself—executed in oil on canvas—are 105 x 69 cm.
This is a size Stoiloff frequently chose for his exceptional monumental works, given that the majority of his paintings were executed on a smaller scale.
Including the frame, the total dimensions are an impressive 132 cm x 95 cm x 7 cm! A painting that demands its own space, yet makes an all the more magnificent impression.

Condition:
The painting is executed in oil on canvas. It has been freshly cleaned, including varnish removal, minor retouching, and the application of a new varnish.
This restores a very clear sense of "freshness," particularly through the depiction of the snowy landscape.
The canvas exhibits typical age-related craquelure.
Signed "C. Stoiloff" at the bottom right.
Inscribed by hand on the back of the stretcher bar with the title "Goldtransport in Sibirien" (Gold Transport in Siberia) and an identification/inventory/exhibition/auction number: "No 3841."

Frame:
The frame is a period piece, featuring a simple yet elegant black piano-lacquer finish with a subtly translucent reddish-brown tint in the cove molding. Likely original to the painting since its creation, it harmonizes perfectly with the artwork.
It features a two-part construction with a slender inner gold molding set on a solid wood base.
Due to age, there are isolated chips in the "gesso"/composition material along the outer black edge.
This is a typical sign of wear for this type of frame over the decades; temperature fluctuations and the resulting tension within the frame often cause these edges to chip slightly—as is the case here. These spots have been touched up in the past. In our opinion, they are not distracting and give the artwork an nice patina. However, anyone wishing to do so could have these areas fully repaired by a professional finisher. As picture frames are a matter of personal taste, this frame is included as a complimentary addition to the painting.
