Hayno Focken – Modernist Metal Art

Offered is this elegant cylindrical brass box (or tea caddy) with a loose-fitting lid by the renowned metal artist Hayno Focken (1905–1968).
A magnificent example of German modernist craftsmanship. It features a timeless design executed in raised, spun, and chased sheet brass. Highly versatile in use.
Hayno Focken initially acquired his skills at the Berlin Art Academy and subsequently studied under Professor Karl Müller, before further honing his craft at the Burg Giebichenstein School of Art and Design—an institution closely aligned with the ideals of the Deutscher Werkbund and the Bauhaus.
In 1932, he established his own workshop in Lahr (Black Forest), where he produced bowls, candlesticks, boxes, altar pieces, pitchers, and other modernist classics. His preferred material was brass, which he shaped according to his own vision; it is not without reason that he is posthumously hailed as the "Master of Brass" (or "Godfather of Brass").
Thanks to his distinctive, timeless design style, he produced certain objects without alteration both before and after the war.
This brass box is likely one such piece. While the design dates back to the mid-1930s, it is impossible to say precisely whether this specific example was made in the 1930s or the early post-war period.

Condition:
Excellent original condition with a light, natural patina. All four original cylindrical "barrel" feet are present. The lid, featuring its original conical knob, fits snugly and sits flush. The cylindrical body is free of dents. The soldered joints at the base are intact and sound. Beautiful, uniform brass luster.
