KPM Burg Giebichenstein VASE HALLE 3

Marguerite Friedlaender - Bauhaus - Burg Giebichenstein - KPM
KPM Vase HALL 3

When tradition and modernity meet, only good things can emerge. This was no different in this case.
KPM - the Royal Porcelain Manufactory Berlin is a manufacturer of fine porcelain products, established in Berlin since 1763. Founded by Frederick the Great, it has been an integral part of artistic and high-quality porcelain ever since. Each era produced specific styles and artists who shaped the "white gold" and still delight museums and collectors today.
Bauhaus - The State Bauhaus, now mostly referred to as Bauhaus, was an art school founded by Walter Gropius in Weimar in 1919. In terms of style and concept, it was something completely new at the time: a fusion of art and craftsmanship. The Bauhaus existed concurrently with and during the Weimar Republic from 1919 to 1933 and is today considered the home of the avant-garde of classical modernism in all fields of free and applied architecture, art, and design. The Bauhaus's resonance continues to this day and significantly shapes the image of modernist movements.
Burg Giebichenstein - The birth of today's Burg Giebichenstein Art Academy in Halle is considered to be the inauguration of architect Paul Thiersch as director on July 1, 1915. The school was now called the Halle School of Crafts and Applied Arts. Thiersch gave it new impetus and reformed it in line with the ideas of the German Werkbund and the Bauhütte ideal. Training and production workshops, as well as specialized art classes, were established, where training was provided without fixed curricula: In addition to a carpentry workshop, classes for painting, graphic design, sculpture, architecture, textile design, and photography were established.
In 1922, the school first moved into premises in the lower castle of Burg Giebichenstein, where it was called the Workshops of the City of Halle, State-Municipal School of Arts and Crafts Burg Giebichenstein. In the same year, a pottery course was established, after architectural ceramics had already been included in the curriculum in 1920.

After the Bauhaus in Weimar was dissolved in 1925 (and moved to Dessau), numerous former Bauhaus students came to the "Burg" as teachers, among them the sculptor Gerhard Marcks, who served as director from 1928 to 1933, as well as Marguerite Friedlaender.

Marguerite Friedlaender, also known as Marguerite Friedlaender-Wildenhain (* October 11, 1896 in Écully near Lyon; † February 24, 1985 in Guerneville, California), was a German-English ceramist and porcelain designer. She studied in the Bauhaus ceramics workshop and taught at the Burg Giebichenstein Art Academy in Halle, where her design influence can still be felt today. Due to her Jewish heritage, she emigrated in 1933, first to the Netherlands and later to the USA.

Collaboration between KPM and BURG GIEBICHENSTEIN. In 1929, the porcelain manufactory and the art school began a collaboration. KPM set up its own porcelain workshop in the castle, with Friedländer as its director.
Geometric shapes in porcelain design had already existed before this merger, but Friedländer reworked and perfected this new series around 1930. This resulted in a seven-piece series, of which the HALLE 3 vase was the largest and was first exhibited around 1930/31.

This collaboration between KPM and the castle officially ended in 1939.

What remains is a contemporary classic, which is once again available from KPM today.
In this case, however, it is an original from the 1930s, bearing the rare Burg Giebichenstein mark and the KPM scepter mark.

It is a completely simple vase – without any painting (which also existed) – timelessly elegant.
The condition is almost excellent.
There is a chip on the base. This could be restored/removed without leaving any residue by a porcelain restorer.
However, we believe that a classic of this quality, age, and history is perfectly acceptable to show signs of wear and tear.
It is not a chip, has no structural impact, and is not particularly disturbing.
