Richard Adolf Zutt - Swiss Metal-Art

RAZUTAL VASES - Richard Adolf Zutt - Metal Workshops Zürich/Switzerland

Very elegant and timeless vases made of a special metal.
Handmade in the 1930s in Zurich, Switzerland.

The material is Razutal, an aluminum alloy developed by the Swiss Richard Adolf Zutt, which is said to have also been used in the Zeppelin II.
R.A. Zutt worked as an artist, metal and ceramic craftsman, and teacher for pupils, students, amateurs, and the unemployed.

From a publication about him:
Born and raised in Basel in 1887, R. A. Zutt, after abandoning his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts, worked so successfully as an autodidact in Munich and Florence that he was appointed professor at the School of Applied Arts in Budapest. As a member of the German Werkbund, he strove to reform art education. During the First World War, he involved his students in the production of medals for charitable organizations, and thanks to a commission from King Charles of Hungary, he founded the private MMM art workshop school for amateurs. In the 1920s, he worked at the New School in Hellerau (together with A. S. Neill) and directed the East German Workshops in Neisse (now Nysa PL). Less well known is that during a stay in Paris he presented a project for a giant World Peace Cross and in 1930 was brought to Zurich, where he directed workshops for older unemployed people, which worked on materials such as Razutal, an aluminum alloy he had developed. Razutal is also said to have been used for the Zeppelin II airship. A stay in Ceylon brought new plans. On his return journey to Switzerland in 1938, he suffered a sudden death on a German ship in the Suez Canal. Two days later, Zeppelin II took off on its maiden flight.

The pair of vases offered here exemplifies the simple, elegant design language of modernism.
Crafted from a single piece and embossed, they demonstrate the craftsmanship of the time and the love of good design.
